Regardless of one's religion or location, everyone rejoices in these festivities. Diwali is one such holiday, with a countrywide display of dazzling lights. However, have you ever heard of Dev Diwali?
You may never have heard of Dev Diwali, and that is not a surprise. Dev Diwali is a special festival celebrated only in select places, and those living outside Uttar Pradesh may not be familiar with it at all. One of the most well-known Dev Diwali celebrations takes place in Banaras. But there is another location that is definitely worth checking out for this special day: Ayodhya. During Dev Diwali in Ayodhya, it is as if the stars have come down to join the festivities. It is a sight that you will not soon forget, so if you get the chance, make sure to plan a trip to Ayodhya this Dev Diwali.
What is dev Diwali:
Celebrating Dev Diwali falls on Kartik Purnima, which occurs 15 days after Diwali. This year, Kartik Purnima falls on November 30th, but it begins on November 29th, making the Dev Diwali festivities occur on the same day. Stories from mythology are associated with the celebration of Dev Diwali, including one that tells of a demon named Tripura who did penance for one lakh years. The three worlds started to shake, causing the gods to become frightened. They tried to halt the demon's penance, but Lord Brahma eventually gave him a boon that prevented both men and gods from killing him. Lord Shiva was called upon by the gods to lend a hand and he subsequently defeated Tripura. Afterwards, the gods descended to earth to rejoice and brighten the night by lighting lamps, which birthed what is now known as Dev Diwali. It is a longstanding belief that the gods return annually to illuminate lamps on Diwali. Furthermore, there is a legend that states Lord Vishnu awakens after 4 months and in honour of this occasion, the gods visit earth to ignite lamps.
When it started:
It was not always celebrated like Diwali, but Dev Diwali is now widely renowned both domestically and internationally. The yearly celebration was initially held solely on the ghats of Kashi. It has been said that approximately thirty years prior, a group of individuals spearheaded the initiation of Dev Diwali. Narayan Guru, an active philanthropist, rallied a band of young people and jumpstarted the festivities on Banaras' ghats. Eventually, Dev Diwali's reach expanded to encompass other ghats as well.
Dev Diwali in Ayodhya:
Celebrated all across India, Dev Diwali in Banaras is renowned for its grandeur. Following this tradition, Dev Deepavali is now observed along the banks of Saryu in Ayodhya. The city was illuminated last year during Dev Diwali, attracting visitors from everywhere. Ayodhya's significance has surged with the initiation of Ram temple construction. Devotees flock to this location for every festival, especially during Dev Diwali- a pilgrimage they cannot miss.
